Two of Afghanistan’s top cricketers, Rashid Khan and Azmatullah Omarzai, have decided to
withdraw from the 2025 season of Major League Cricket (MLC), citing personal reasons. Their
absence comes as a major blow to both their franchises, especially given their strong
performances in the past.
Rashid Khan was a key player for MI New York in the 2024 season. He impressed with the ball,
taking 10 wickets at a remarkable economy rate of 6.15, making him the side’s best bowler. His
ability to control the middle overs had played a vital role in the team's campaign.
Now, MI New York will have to adjust without their main spinner, which could affect their
overall bowling strength.
Rashid's recent form, however, has raised concerns. He had a difficult season with Gujarat
Titans in IPL 2025, where he managed just 9 wickets with an economy rate of 9.34 and a
bowling average of 57.11. He was also hit for a record 33 sixes, the most in his IPL career.
Rashid isn’t the only Afghan star stepping aside. Azmatullah Omarzai, who played for Punjab
Kings in the 2025 IPL (where they finished runners-up), has also withdrawn from the MLC
season. He was expected to bring pace and balance to MI New York but will be unavailable for
selection.
Despite these withdrawals, several Afghan cricketers have already joined their MLC teams:
Naveen-ul-Haq has signed again with MI New York.
Noor Ahmad is back with the Texas Super Kings.
Waqar Salamkheil has joined the Seattle Orcas.
However, visa issues have created uncertainty for a few players. Gulbadin Naib and Fazalhaq
Farooqi, both signed by Seattle Orcas, are still waiting for US visas. This delay is due to a travel
restriction imposed by the US government on citizens from 12 countries, including
Afghanistan.
The absence of Rashid and Omarzai will be felt, especially by MI New York. Their decision
highlights the growing challenge for Afghan players to balance international commitments,
franchise leagues, and personal matters—especially with travel restrictions in place.
MLC 2025 will still feature Afghan talent, but the full strength of Afghanistan’s cricketing stars
may not be on display this year.
