Just one month after ending the greatest season in their history, Paris St-Germain begin the new campaign with another trophy in sight.
The French giants, who completed a historic Treble last season by winning Ligue 1, the French Cup and their first-ever Champions League title, will take on Europa League winners Tottenham in the UEFA Super Cup in Udine, Italy.
PSG were beaten 3-0 by Chelsea in last month’s Club World Cup final in New Jersey — a result that denied them the chance of a record-breaking seven trophies in a calendar year. However, victory over Spurs would still see them match the joint-record of six trophies in one year, a feat achieved only by Barcelona in 2009 and Bayern Munich in 2020.
Christophe Galtier’s side will be hoping that the Chelsea loss was merely a blip in an otherwise dominant run. PSG had dismantled Inter Milan 5-0 in the Champions League final, regarded by many as the most one-sided in the competition’s history. They also impressed during their tour of the United States, beating both Madrid clubs 4-0 and seeing off Bayern Munich despite finishing that match with nine men.
Their first piece of silverware this year came in January, when they edged out Monaco 1-0 in the Trophée des Champions — France’s equivalent of the Community Shield — held in Doha. They secured the Ligue 1 title on 5 April with six games to spare and completed the domestic Double by beating Reims 3-0 in the French Cup final.
With a young, dynamic squad playing thrilling football, PSG have become a formidable force in Europe. A win over Spurs would mark their sixth trophy of 2025, with the possibility of a seventh still alive in December’s Intercontinental Cup final — where they will face one of the other continental champions.
