Shamit Shome made his debut for Bangladesh in their match against Singapore, marking his first appearance in the national colours. Although the team suffered a defeat, the midfielder left a strong impression by creating six promising chances throughout the game.
Despite the loss, Shamit expressed pride in representing Bangladesh. He has since returned to Canada but shared his thoughts on Instagram, reflecting on the experience: “Thank you, Bangladesh. It was an incredible feeling to represent and play for this country for the first time. We couldn’t quite achieve what we wanted in the match, so there’s some disappointment. But I’m extremely proud to be a part of this team.”
Born and raised in Canada to Bangladeshi parents, the 27-year-old midfielder previously played two matches for the Canadian national team in 2020. After a long absence from international football, Shamit currently plays for Cavalry FC in the Canadian Premier League.
Eager to represent Bangladesh following FIFA’s approval, he had to wait a bit longer for his debut. He was rested during the 4 June friendly against Bhutan by head coach Javier Cabrera. His opportunity finally came against Singapore, although a win remained elusive.
Bangladesh’s next fixtures in the AFC Asian Cup qualifiers are scheduled for October. They are set to host Hong Kong on 9 October, before facing them away on 14 October. Shamit is expected to return to Dhaka for those matches, continuing his international journey with Bangladesh.
