Police have arrested the prime accused in the rape case involving an expatriate’s wife in Muradnagar upazila of Cumilla from Dhaka’s Sutrapur area early Sunday.
The arrestee is Fazar Ali Fazar, 36, son of Shahid Mia of Baher char (Purbo Para) village in Muradnagar.
Jahidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Muradnagar Police Station, said that on a tip off, a special team conducted a drive in Dhaka’s Sutrapur area and arrested Fazar Ali.
A video of the incident was also recorded and later circulated online that created instant outrage across the country.
Muradnagr police also arrested four persons for spreading the video on social media. The arrestees are Anik, Sumon, Ramzan and Babu.
The victim, a 21-year-old woman was raped at knifepoint in Ramchandrapur Panchkitta village under Muradnagar upazila. The survivor, a mother of two, had gone to visit her father’s house around two weeks ago.

The incident took place on the night of June 26 around 8:00 pm in Panchkitta village of Ramchandrapur union under Muradnagar police station.
Fazar Ali raped the victim at knifepoint and threatened to kill her if she disclosed the incident, according to the case statement filed by the survivor the next day.
She added that locals rushed to the scene when she began screaming and they beat up Fazor. Police said he later fled the scene, even though he was injured.
Meanwhile, hundreds of Dhaka university students in small hours last night took part in a protest rally demanding immediate arrest of the rapist and justice for the victim.
