Press wing clarifies about election timeframe

Press wing of Chief Adviser in a corrected release said that Chief Adviser and Chairman of the National Consensus Commission, Muhammad Yunus, has called for expediting the ongoing reform process with the aim of holding the national elections between December this year and June next year.

He made the call during a meeting with two members of the commission, held in the afternoon at his official residence, Jamuna.

The press wing said the commission earlier had mentioned only about December. It will be between December and June.

The meeting was attended by Ali Riaz, vice chairman of the National Consensus Commission, and Badiul Alam Majumdar, a member of the commission. Special Assistant to the Chief Adviser on consensus building, Monir Haidar, was also present.

During the meeting, Ali Riaz and Badiul Alam Majumdar briefed the chairman on the progress of the commission’s activities.

They informed him that discussions are ongoing with various political parties based on the recommendations of different reform commissions. So far, talks have been held with eight parties, with a meeting with the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) set for next Thursday.

They also stated that a range of initiatives have been undertaken to evaluate public opinion on the reforms and to raise public awareness regarding the reform process.
