An earthquake of strong 7.5 magnitude struck the Drake Passage in the South Atlantic Ocean on Thursday, according to the United States Geological Survey (USGS).
The tremor occurred at 11:16pm local time near the Drake Passage, about 710 kilometers southeast of Ushuaia, Argentina, at a depth of 10.8 kilometers.
The US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) reported that the earlier tsunami advisory for parts of Antarctica had been lifted. No evacuation orders have been issued in Chile or Argentina, the countries closest to the quake.
Though the region is less prone to earthquakes than other parts of Chile’s coast, its remote location means no immediate reports of damage or casualties have emerged.
The Drake Passage, which connects the South Atlantic and South Pacific oceans between South America and the Antarctic Peninsula, lies within a seismically active zone.
