The government has decided to review the contracts signed for Independent Power Plants (IPP) during the Awami League’s tenure, citing inconsistencies in the agreements, announced Finance Adviser Salehuddin Ahmed.

Speaking after the meetings of the Cabinet Committee on Government Purchase and the Cabinet Committee on Economic Affairs at the Secretariat on 15 July, Ahmed confirmed that the government would revisit these contracts, which include several agreements with foreign companies.

“The High Court has already directed to review the IPP contracts,” he stated.

The finance adviser noted that the review would involve discussions and legal assistance, stressing that the process could not be done unilaterally due to its legal implications.

Recently, the High Court declared two sections of the “Indemnity Act” related to the power sector unconstitutional. These sections had granted the government immunity from legal challenges and exclusive authority to approve sector plans. However, the High Court allowed actions taken under these sections in good faith to avoid legal complexities.

Additionally, the court directed relevant authorities to take immediate steps to ensure the full operation of all state-owned power plants in national interest.
