Joe Root has climbed to second place on the list of all-time Test run scorers, and former Australia captain Ricky Ponting believes the England star has every chance of going all the way to the top.

Root scored a brilliant 150 in the fourth Test against India at Old Trafford. His innings helped him move past Rahul Dravid, Jacques Kallis, and finally Ponting himself. Root now has 13,409 runs in 157 Test matches, with only India’s Sachin Tendulkar ahead of him on 15,921 runs.

The packed crowd at Old Trafford gave Root a loud standing ovation when he passed Ponting’s mark of 13,378 runs. Root also reached his 38th Test century during the innings, matching Kumar Sangakkara’s total.

Ponting, who watched the moment closely, praised Root’s hunger and skill. Speaking to Sky Sports, he said Root’s form in recent years shows he has what it takes to break the record.

“He has scored 25 centuries after turning 30. That shows how much he still wants to score runs. There is no reason he cannot become number one,” Ponting said. “He keeps working hard and trying to improve, even at this stage of his career.”

England vice-captain Ollie Pope, who made 71 and shared a 144-run stand with Root, agreed with Ponting’s view. He said Root’s love for Test cricket and playing for England remains strong.

“He just loves playing Test cricket. If his body stays fit, I am sure he will want to chase down that record,” Pope said.

England ended day three on 544 for 7, giving them a lead of 186 runs. Root’s calm and classical batting style stood out again, especially in a team known for aggressive play under Ben Stokes and Brendon McCullum.

Pope said Root’s approach adds balance to the side and has been key to England’s 2-1 lead in the series.

“We’ve played smart cricket when needed. Without that, we may not be ahead right now,” Pope said. “Joe’s form will be very important in the final match and also in the Ashes later this year.” Root has not scored a century in Australia, something he will be eager to change. With six more Tests coming up, his chase of Tendulkar’s record continues to gather pace.
