Police have sought a seven-day remand for online content creator Tawhid Afridi in connection with a murder case linked to the July Uprising.
Criminal Investigation Department (CID) officer Md Erfan filed the petition on Monday. He told reporters around 11:30am that an application had been placed before the court for a week-long interrogation.
Tawhid, son of MyTV chairman and managing director Nasir Uddin, was arrested by CID in Barishal on Sunday night. Barishal Metropolitan Police Commissioner Shafiqul Islam confirmed the arrest, saying his location was tracked “with the help of information technology” before CID moved in with local police support.
Kotwali Model Police Station Officer-in-Charge Mizanur Rahman said Tawhid was detained from a building beside the Popular Diagnostic Lab in Barishal’s Bangla Bazar area.
Case records show that protester Md Asadul Haque Babu was shot dead during a demonstration in Dhaka’s Jatrabari on 5 August 2024. His father, Joynal Abedin, filed a murder case on 30 August accusing 25 people, including former prime minister Sheikh Hasina. Tawhid and his father were among the accused.
Earlier, Dhaka Metropolitan Police arrested Nasir Uddin in Gulshan on 17 August. A court placed him on a five-day remand before sending him to jail.
The court is scheduled to hear the remand petition against Tawhid later this week.
