Inspector General of Police (IGP) Baharul Alam has said that the police are refraining from using lethal weapons while trying to manage the escalating situation in Gopalganj.

“We are trying to contain the unrest as patiently as possible. We are reinforcing the area by deploying additional police personnel to bring the situation under control. We are not using any lethal force, which is why it is taking some time,” he told the BBC Bangla.

Tensions flared in Gopalganj from midday on Wednesday amid a rally organised by the National Citizen Party (NCP). By evening, the situation remained volatile, although NCP leaders and activists were escorted out of Gopalganj town under heavy police and military protection.

So far, four casualties have been reported from Gopalganj.
