Home Affairs Adviser Lt Col (retd) Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has warned that disciplinary action will be taken against police officials who fail to control future rallies organised by the Awami League.

The adviser made the remarks while speaking to journalists during a visit to Bimanbandar Police Station in the capital on Saturday.

Responding to questions regarding police inaction during recent Awami League rallies, he said two individuals have already been arrested. He further noted that instructions have been given to the police to prevent such rallies from occurring in the future.

“We are making continuous efforts to improve the law-and-order situation across the country,” Chowdhury said.

Addressing concerns about police officers remaining at their previous postings despite being officially transferred, the adviser said specific information is necessary for action to be taken.

“If we receive concrete details of officers who have not moved after being transferred, appropriate measures will be taken,” he assured.

On the matter of police personnel being posted far from their families, Chowdhury acknowledged the strain it places on their well-being.

“They are entitled to only 20 days of annual leave, and even that is sometimes difficult to grant. Being stationed far from family reduces their chances of taking leave. As such, we are considering whether lower-ranking officers can be kept within the same division,” he explained.

Chowdhury also stated that his visit to the police station aimed to assess and improve the accommodation and meal facilities provided to officers.

The adviser’s comments come amid increased scrutiny over the role of law enforcement during political events, as the government seeks to ensure stability and maintain public order in the lead-up to significant political developments.
