Police have registered four murder cases in connection with the deadly clashes during the National Citizen Party (NCP) rally in Gopalganj.

Four sub-inspectors from Sadar Police Station filed these cases on Saturday night, collectively naming 5,400 unidentified individuals under various sections of the Penal Code including 147, 148, 149, 186, 153, 307, 302, and 34. Gopalganj Sadar Police Station Investigation Officer Abdullah Al Mamun confirmed the murder case filings.

The violence has claimed five lives to date: Dipto Saha (25) from Udayan Road in Gopalganj municipality, Sohail Rana Mollah (35) from Tungipara upazila, Ramzan Kazi (18) from Harinahati village in Kotalipara upazila, Imon Talukder (18) from Bherar Bazar area, and Ramjan Munshi (35) from Thanapara area.

Murder cases have been filed for four of the victims, with each case naming between 900 and 1,500 unidentified accused. No case has been registered yet for Ramjan Munshi’s death.

Prior to these murder cases, police had already filed four separate cases regarding attacks on law enforcement, vehicle vandalism, arson, and anti-state activities across sadar, Kashiani, and Kotalipara police stations. These earlier cases specifically named 358 Awami League and affiliate organisation members alongside 2,650 unidentified accused.

Law enforcement agencies have conducted raids across the district since Wednesday, arresting 321 individuals through court-ordered detentions as of Sunday noon, including 15 arrests in the last 24 hours.

The violence erupted on Wednesday when Awami League activists allegedly attacked the NCP’s “July March to Buid the Nation” program in Gopalganj, leading to clashes with law enforcement that left five dead and over fifty injured.

To control the situation, District Administrator and Magistrate Muhammad Kamruzzaman initially imposed Section 144, followed by a curfew that was extended multiple times through the night.
