Former members of Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB) (formerly Bangladesh Rifles) who were dismissed following the 2009 Pilkhana carnage, blocked the Shahbagh intersection in the capital on Monday to press home their three-point demands, including reinstatement in the force.

The sacked BDR members and families of imprisoned members under the banner of “Justice for BDR” blocked Shahbagh intersection at around 1:10pm on Monday.

Earlier, they took out a procession from the Central Shaheed Minar and were heading towards the Jamuna to hold a demonstration.

They protesters broke the barricade placed by the police in front of Shahbagh police station and took up a position, halting vehicular movement in and adjacent areas.

The three-point demands are: a reconsideration of the trail of the Peelkhana massacre, the release of innocent prisoners, and compensation and reinstatement of dismissed members.

Shahbagh Assistant Commissioner of Traffic Md Shakil confirmed the development and said vehicular movement remained suspended since 1pm due to the blockade at Shahbagh.
