Pakistani government has allocated 2,000 megawatts of electricity for Bitcoin mining and AI data centres. This move is part of a broader plan to use surplus power, attract foreign investment, and create high-tech jobs.

The Pakistan Crypto Council (PCC), formed in March and backed by the Finance Ministry, is leading the initiative. Entrepreneur Bilal Bin Saqib has been appointed as chief adviser to the finance minister on crypto matters, reports DAWN.

Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb said this effort will help turn idle energy into economic opportunities, positioning Pakistan as a global data hub between Asia, Europe, and the Middle East.

Global tech firms have shown strong interest, with several already visiting Pakistan. The initiative aims to convert unused energy into digital revenue through Bitcoin mining and AI services.

With over 40 million crypto users and a growing digital infrastructure — including the newly landed Africa-2 internet cable — Pakistan is well-placed to lead in Web3, AI, and digital services.

Future plans include using renewable energy, offering tax incentives, and forming international partnerships to expand this digital ecosystem.
