The century-old paddle steamer PS Mahsud, a relic of Bangladesh’s rich riverine heritage, is set to service on the Dhaka–Barishal route again next month after extensive restoration, officials confirmed on Friday.
According to the Ministry of Shipping, the steamer, owned by the Bangladesh Inland Water Transport Corporation (BIWTC), has been refurbished with a blend of historical preservation and modern safety upgrades to attract tourists and promote river-based travel.
Brigadier General (retd) Dr M Sakhawat Hossain, adviser to the ministry, said the vessel has completed its restoration phase and is now undergoing final mechanical and navigational tests during a trial journey from Sadarghat to Munshiganj.
“PS Mahsud is completely ready to sail again. The trial run is to ensure its full operational capability. A formal relaunch ceremony will be held on 15 November, after which the steamer will begin regular tourist trips between Dhaka and Barishal,” Dr Hossain said.
Emphasizing the steamer’s cultural importance, he added, “This vessel represents more than just transportation, it is a floating testament to our river heritage. We want today’s generation to experience how waterways once shaped Bangladesh’s communication, trade, and culture.”
The PS Mahsud has retained much of its original exterior and structural design, while key components such as engines, navigation systems, and safety measures have been modernized. It now features upgraded passenger cabins, scenic viewing decks, and GPS-equipped digital controls.
Officials said the steamer will operate weekly, departing from Dhaka to Barishal every Friday and returning the next day offering travellers a nostalgic yet comfortable river voyage through Bangladesh’s heartland.
The vessel is equipped with international-standard safety gear, lifeboats, fire suppression systems, and a low-emission engine to reduce environmental impact. A 25-member trained crew will oversee onboard operations.
Dr Hossain also mentioned that similar restoration projects are underway for other vintage paddle steamers, including PS Ostrich, PS Lepcha, and PS Turn, as part of an initiative to preserve the nation’s river transport legacy.
The trial run of PS Mahsud was attended by Delowara Begum, Ministry of Shipping secretary (routine), Md Salim Ullah, BIWTC chair, and senior officials from various departments.
