Gano Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur has alleged that the oppressed have now become arrogant and turning into the oppressors.

He made the allegation while addressing the national rally of Jamaat-e-Islami at Suhrawardy Udyan in the capital on Saturday.

Referring to the aftermath of July Uprising, Nur said, “We are witnessing how some of our fellow fighters in this mass uprising—those who were once oppressed—are now becoming arrogant and oppressive.”

“I want to remind you: if we overstep our bounds, Almighty Allah will not spare us, just as He won’t spare Sheikh Hasina.”

He further said, “To make the changes achieved through the blood and sacrifices of students and the masses sustainable, the government must bring about a fundamental shift in the governance system.”

A neutral administrative framework must first be ensured, so that all political parties can campaign freely and a true level playing field can be created, Nur continues.

The Gano Odhikar Parishad chief said there have been no elected representatives for the past 11 months. To end this paralysis, local government elections must be held immediately.

He also expressed concern over the inactivity of the Dhaka University Central Students’ Union (DUCSU), saying, “Many ask me, ‘Did you take the key to DUCSU with you? Why is it still not functioning?’ I want to say: student union elections, including DUCSU, must be held to usher in a new era of qualitative change in student politics.”

He expressed hope that the government will implement the ‘July Declaration’ and the ‘July Charter’ within this very month. Otherwise, the partners of this historic change will be forced to issue a new declaration based on national consensus—just as the Islami Andalon, Jamaat, and other parties have already held rallies at Suhrawardy Udyan.”
