BNP Standing Committee member Mirza Abbas has lambasted the Chief Advisor stating that Yunus is the only individual in the country who does not want the national election to be held by December.
The senior BNP leader said this while talking to journalists after placing wreaths at the graveyard of President Ziaur Rahman in Sher-e-Bangla Nagar marking 44th martyrdom of the late president.
Responding to Yunus’s comments at the Nikkei Forum in Japan, Abbas added, “Dr. Yunus said from Japan that a certain party wants elections in December. Ironically, it was he who first mentioned December, and now he is talking about June. We want to make it clear—elections must be held in December, not in June.”
He further asserted, “We will ensure elections through the power of the people. If not, the geographical integrity of the country will be at stake.”
Abbas also criticized the government’s ongoing reform initiatives, accusing it of relying on foreign consultants. “The current government is bringing in foreign advisors in the name of reform. But President Zia carried out reforms with local efforts,” he said.
Earlier, Mirza Abbas, accompanied by senior BNP leaders including Goyeshwar Chandra Roy, Abdul Moyeen Khan, and Salah Uddin Ahmed, placed wreaths at the grave of the party’s founder, Ziaur Rahman.
After a prayer session, the BNP leaders reflected on Ziaur Rahman’s political legacy, stating that “Shaheed Zia was the true reformer of this country.”
