The National Board of Revenue (NBR) has made online submission of income tax returns mandatory for all individual taxpayers starting from August 4, 2025, with only a few specific exemptions, according to a press release issued on Sunday.
Under the new directive, individual taxpayers across the country must file their income tax returns through the e-return platform (www.etaxnbr.gov.bd) for the 2025–26 assessment year. Only senior citizens aged 65 or above, physically or mentally challenged individuals (with supporting certification), Bangladeshi citizens living abroad, and legal representatives filing for deceased taxpayers are allowed to submit paper-based returns if they choose.
The revenue authority clarified that any taxpayer unable to access the e-return system due to technical registration issues may apply in writing to their respective tax office with valid reasons by 31 October 2025. Subject to approval from the additional or joint tax commissioner, paper submission may be permitted in such cases.
This move follows last year’s successful pilot where mandatory e-filing was introduced for select zones, bank employees, and staff of multinational companies, resulting in more than 1.7 million taxpayers submitting returns online.
To facilitate this shift, the NBR has integrated multiple payment options including bank transfers, debit and credit cards, and mobile financial services such as bKash, Rocket, and Nagad. This allows taxpayers to settle dues and submit returns entirely from home.
For any difficulties during the filing process, the NBR has ensured dedicated support via its call centre and online platforms to assist taxpayers around the clock.
