One killed in Cox’s Bazar gunfight over fish enclosure

One person was killed in a gunfight between two rival groups over control of a fish enclosure in Chakaria upazila of Cox’s Bazar late Saturday night.

The clash erupted around 11:45 pm in the Saudagarghona Rampur housing project area under Chiringa union, Chakaria Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md Shafiqul Islam confirmed.

The victim was identified as 40-year-old Shekab Uddin, son of Manjur Alam from Rampur area in Saharbil union.

Locals said both groups were part of a gang of robbers and claimed Shekab himself was accused in multiple murder cases.

Police and local sources said the two groups had been at odds for a long time over control of the enclosure. On Saturday night, an armed confrontation broke out, leaving Shekab critically injured by gunfire.

He was taken to Chakaria Upazila Health Complex, where doctors declared him dead.

OC Shafiqul Islam said initial investigation indicates the clash stemmed from the dispute over the enclosure. The body was sent to Cox’s Bazar District Sadar Hospital morgue for autopsy, and police have launched a drive to arrest those involved.
