A 55-year-old woman died, and four other members of her family were hospitalised after suffering from severe diarrhoea after consuming mangoes in Moharajpur union of Koyra upazila.
The deceased was identified as Latika Sana. She passed away on Wednesday afternoon while undergoing treatment at the Koyra Upazila Health Complex.
The other affected family members are Tulsi Sana, 42, Indrajit Sana, 14, Vivekananda Sana, 60, and Prakash Sana, 51. Medical authorities have confirmed that the four survivors are currently out of danger.
According to family and hospital sources, five members of the six-member family consumed mangoes purchased from the local Hayatkhali Bazar on Tuesday night. Although they initially showed no symptoms, they began experiencing severe stomach complications, including repeated vomiting and physical weakness, from early Wednesday morning.
As their conditions deteriorated, they were rushed to the Koyra Upazila Health Complex in the afternoon. Upon arrival, the duty doctor declared Latika Sana dead.
Resident Medical Officer Sujit Kumar Vaidya said Latika Sana was brought dead to the facility, while the other four were admitted for treatment.
He suggested that the mangoes might have been contaminated with excessive chemicals or toxic substances during storage. “Sample testing and a thorough investigation are necessary to determine the exact cause,” he added.
Nitish Sana, nephew of the deceased, said the family members fell ill one after another in the early hours of the morning following the consumption of the fruit the previous night.
The incident has sparked widespread concern and panic in the locality regarding fruit safety and the use of chemicals. Health experts have advised the public to be cautious, recommending that store-bought fruits be washed thoroughly before consumption.
