Former state minister for planning Dr Shamsul Alam was sent to jail after he was arrested on Thursday in connection with the gruesome murder of Juba Dal leader Shamim.
Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate Sarah Farzana Haque passed the detention order after police produced Shamsul Alam before the court.
Police pleaded to keep the former junior minister behind bars till the end of the investigation into the murder case.
Detective police hunted down Shamsul Alam in Mohammadpur area of the capital in the early hours as he is accused of different charges in many cases over the July mass uprising.
According to the prosecution, the killing took place on October 28, 2023, when the BNP announced a grand rally in the capital.
On the same day, Awami League (AL) also held a counter-rally with an eye to foil the BNP’s programme.
Later, clashes broke out in Naya Paltan, where AL activists with the support of the police attacked the BNP’s rally, killing Jubo Dal leader Shamim on the spot.
The case was filed with Paltan Police Station in the capital on September 24, 2024.
