Activists of Oikya Parishad have called for a protest at Shahbagh on July 11, demanding an increase the minimum age limit to 35 public sector jobs. They further urged that the age restriction for certain special sectors be removed entirely.

Oikya Parishad, formed to support the movement demanding reforms in government job age limits, made this announcement from a programme held in front of the National Press Club in the capital on Wednesday.

They demanded the implementation of the recommendation of the Muyeed commission, which was formed to reform the age limit for entry in government jobs. Additionally, they also urged the removal of age restrictions for some special professions, including teaching, ICT, judiciary, the technical sector, among others.

“In the past, meritorious students were deprived of government jobs due to question leaks, corruption, and party recruitment. So, to provide opportunities for them, it is necessary to increase the age limit for entering a public sector job,’ one of the speakers said.

They stated that in 162 countries, jobseekers can start government jobs at least up to the age of 40. In developed countries, one can enter the job market up to the age of 59. As such, there is precedence for Bangladesh to increase the age limit for entering a job without hesitation, they added.

Moreover, they also demanded an interest-free loan of up to Tk50 lakh to encourage the educated youth to follow a path towards entrepreneurship.

Former students of Dhaka University, Jagannath University, and Seven College were present at the programme.
