On Tuesday, popular film actress Nusraat Faria was granted bail by the Dhaka Metropolitan Magistrate’s Court following a special submission.

Her lawyer, Barrister Mohammad Iftekhar Hossain, confirmed the news.

He said, “The Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Court-1 was satisfied with our submission and has finally granted bail to actress Nusraat Faria.”

Faria was taken to the court Monday morning, where the metropolitan magistrate Nasreen Akhter denied her bail and sent her to prison. The judge had initially set May 22 as bail hearing date.

According to police, she and 16 other actors have been named in a case filed over the attempted murder of a student, Enamul Hoque, during the Anti-discrimination Student Movement in Dhaka’s Vatara area.

She was handed over to the office of the Detective Branch (DB) of the Dhaka Metropolitan Police after being detained at the Hazrat Shahjalal International Airport in Dhaka by police at the immigration checkpoint on Sunday.

In 2023, Nusraat Faria had portrayed the role of deposed former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the biographical film Mujib: The Making of a Nation, based on the life of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman. The film was a joint production between Bangladesh and India, directed by maestro filmmaker Shyam Benegal.

Previously, on Monday, Cultural Affairs Adviser Mostofa Sarwar Farooki on Monday expressed “disappointment” over the recent arrest of actress Nusrat Faria, calling it an “embarrassing incident.” Home Adviser Lieutenant General Md Jahangir Alam Chowdhury (Retd) responded to Farooki’s comments, terming it merely a “personal opinion.”
