Several people, including Gono Odhikar Parishad President Nurul Haque Nur, were injured in a clash with police in front of the Jatiya Party (JaPa) central office on Friday night. Nur, bleeding heavily, was rushed to a nearby hospital.

The second round of unrest began around 8:15pm when leaders of Gono Odhikar Parishad gathered near the JaPa office.

Eyewitnesses say a fresh chase and counter-chase broke out between activists of the two parties. The army intervened, dispersing JaPa activists and instructing Gono Odhikar leaders to leave the premises within ten minutes.

When they refused, police carried out a baton charge, leaving Nur and several others injured.

Earlier, around 6pm, activists of JaPa and Gono Odhikar Parishad had engaged in clashes near the same location. JaPa leaders alleged that Gano Adhikar men attacked them with a procession.

On the other hand, Gono Odhikar activists accused JaPa supporters of provoking the violence by pelting bricks and stones at their procession.

Confirming the incident, Ramna Police Station acting officer-in-charge (OC) Golam Faruk told reporters, “The initial chase and counter-chase between the two groups was initially brought under control after army patrols and police forces reached the spot.”
