The Bangladesh Cricket League (BCL) final takes centre stage today (Tuesday) as Central Zone meet North Zone at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, with the match scheduled to begin at 2:15pm.
The 50-over competition has served as crucial preparation for Bangladesh’s cricketers ahead of the forthcoming Pakistan series. With several national team players involved, the final promises to be a closely contested affair.
North Zone will rely on the experience of Najmul Hossain Shanto and Litton Das, who headline a squad packed with international pedigree. Their opponents, Central Zone, feature Saif Hassan and Naim Sheikh among their key batters as they seek to finish the tournament on a high.
Speaking to reporters on Monday, North Zone coach Tareq Aziz Khan expressed confidence in his side’s readiness.
“Sabbir Rahman made excellent use of his opportunity in the last match. All our players are prepared for the final. We want to go in with the right combination and deliver the result we’re aiming for,” he said.
The coach also highlighted the importance of maintaining momentum built earlier in the tournament.
This season’s BCL fixtures were previously staged in Bogura and Rajshahi, where the pitches earned praise for their quality. Attention now shifts to Mirpur, traditionally known for offering assistance to bowlers.
Tareq remains hopeful of a balanced surface for the day-night final.
“The wickets in this year’s BCL have been very good. We hope Mirpur moves away from its usual character and provides a sporting pitch. On a good surface, players can develop both the ability to score big runs and to bowl effectively on flatter tracks,” he noted.
For Central Zone, the final represents more than just a title opportunity. Saif Hassan believes the additional match is invaluable preparation ahead of Bangladesh’s ODI commitments.
“Reaching the final has given us another match, which is excellent preparation before an ODI series. Hopefully we can produce an even better performance,” he said.
Saif echoed the optimism surrounding the Mirpur pitch, especially with the contest being played under lights.
“Bogura and Rajshahi generally provide very good wickets. As this is a day-night match in Mirpur, we’re hopeful of a good surface. Match practice before a series is extremely important, particularly for a batter. Wherever we play, I always try to give my full effort,” he added.
The right-handed opener admitted he has had limited opportunities in the 50-over format over the past year and a half, often featuring in ODIs between T20 assignments.
“With upcoming ODI series ahead, preparation will be even more significant, especially with the next World Cup in mind,” Saif concluded.
