The Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) has dismissed any security concern surrounding August, despite discussions about potential threats linked to the July Uprising and the anniversary of the Interim Government. According to DMP, the situation remains stable and under control.
Speaking at a press conference on Friday afternoon at DMP’s Media Center in Minto Road, Deputy Commissioner (DC) of the Media and Public Relations Department, Mohammad Talebur Rahman assured the public that no immediate threats have been identified for the month of August.
“Over the past year, we have observed multiple attempts to disturb law and order in the city, but we remain vigilant and prepared,” said DC Talebur Rahman. “We are actively monitoring the situation, and currently, there is no security concern specific to August.”
The police spokesperson also addressed recent events, including a secret meeting involving Awami League members in the Bhatara area of Dhaka, where 22 individuals were arrested for engaging in ‘conspiratorial’ activities. The meeting was reportedly organized for training Awami League activists, with the involvement of a military officer, Major Sadikul Haque, who was later taken into military custody.
The authorities revealed that the meeting was held under the guise of a business conference, with individuals allegedly involved in a conspiracy to destabilize the country. The DMP has promised to fully investigate the matter, with 22 individuals arrested and further developments expected soon.
Addressing rumors circulating on social media about potential threats related to the August 8 anniversary, Talebur Rahman reassured the public that law enforcement agencies remain vigilant and capable of addressing any challenges.
“While we are aware of planned efforts to disrupt public order, we are confident that our measures are sufficient to maintain stability,” he said. “There are no concerns for August, and we are fully prepared to respond to any developments.”
Additionally, the DMP reported that 489 patrol teams and 66 check posts had been deployed across key locations in Dhaka, ensuring public safety. Over the past 24 hours, 254 arrests were made across the city, with drugs, mobile phones, motorcycles, and a private car seized.
The police reiterated their commitment to tackling criminal activities without resorting to arbitrary or unfair arrests. “We are not conducting mass arrests; only those with clear evidence against them are being apprehended,” said Talebur Rahman.
The authorities emphasized that their focus remains on maintaining a stable and secure environment as the city moves into August.
