Liberation War Affairs Adviser Faruk-e-Azam Bir Pratik on Thursday said the interim government has no plans to rename the Mujibnagar Government, emphasising its historical and international recognition.

“The Mujibnagar Government is an internationally recognised and constitutional government, as it organised the country’s War of Liberation and helped establish relations with international communities,” the adviser told reporters after placing wreaths at the Mujibnagar Memorial in Meherpur, marking the historic Mujibnagar Day.

Reaffirming the importance of preserving the legacy of the Mujibnagar Government, he added, “There is no plan to rename the Mujibnagar Government. History cannot be erased. History must be kept in its rightful place.”

The adviser continued, “It is up to the future elected government to decide what it will do in this regard. We have many achievements, and we do not want to place them into controversy unnecessarily. History must be preserved intact.”

Earlier in the day, at 5:43 am, Faruk-e-Azam hoisted the national flag while the national anthem was played, and a guard of honour was presented. Two Ansar members who had presented the guard of honour to national leaders on 17 April 1971 were also honoured.

Following the ceremony, the adviser visited various parts of the Mujibnagar Memorial Complex and the Amrakanan.

Responding to a journalist’s query, he expressed concern over false claims to the freedom fighter title. “Real freedom fighters often feel embarrassed because many have falsely claimed the title. This is a shameful matter. We have already taken several steps to address it. Some cases are awaiting court verdicts. Over 2,700 cases are pending, and we expect their resolution soon,” he said.

Also present during the event were Secretary to the Ministry of Liberation War Israt Jahan, Meherpur Deputy Commissioner Sifat Mehnaz, Superintendent of Police Maksuda Akhter Khanam, and other officials and members of the public from various walks of life.
