In a dramatic turn of events, Nico Williams has put pen to paper on a new ten-year contract with Athletic Club, ending widespread speculation linking him with a summer move to FC Barcelona.

The 22-year-old winger had been heavily courted by the Catalan giants, who were reportedly prepared to trigger his €62 million release clause. Negotiations between Barcelona and Williams’ camp had progressed to the point of agreeing a six-year contract, but talks hit a roadblock over guarantees regarding his registration under La Liga’s financial regulations — assurances Barça were unwilling to provide in writing.

Despite optimism within Barcelona’s ranks that a deal could still be struck, Williams has now made a decisive move by renewing his commitment to Athletic Club until 2035.

In a video released by the Basque club to announce the extension, Williams expressed his loyalty and affection for his boyhood team:

“When it comes to making decisions, the most important thing is to listen to your heart. I am in the place where I want to be, with my people. This is my home.”

The new deal cements Williams’ role as a central figure in Athletic’s long-term project and is a major boost for the club, who have retained one of Spain’s brightest young talents amid increasing interest from Europe’s elite.
