The International Crimes Tribunal (ICT) has set August 6 for the next round of witness testimony in the ongoing war crimes trial against ousted prime minister Sheikh Hasina and former home minister Asaduzzaman Khan Kamal.

The date was fixed on Monday, following the court’s second witness examination, presided over by Tribunal Chairman Justice Golam Mortuza Majumder and his two fellow judges.

Earlier in the day, former inspector general of police Chowdhury Abdullah Al-Mamun, now serving as a state witness, was brought to the tribunal from Keraniganj Central Jail to testify against Hasina. He had previously been listed as a co-accused but is now cooperating with prosecutors.

The trial officially began on Sunday with opening statements and initial witness testimony. During their remarks, prosecutors demanded the highest possible punishment for both Hasina and Kamal, citing overwhelming evidence of crimes against humanity committed during the July–August 2024 uprising.

The tribunal had formally indicted Hasina, Kamal, and Mamun on July 10, setting the stage for full proceedings.

According to the prosecution, more than 1,400 people, mainly students and civilians, were killed during the two-month protest movement.

Key allegations against Sheikh Hasina include her public branding of protesting students as “children of Razakars” on July 14, direct orders to open fire from helicopters, the killing of student leader Abu Sayeed in Rangpur, the execution-style murders of six students including Anas in Chankharpul, and the incineration of six bodies in Ashulia.
