Jamaat-e-Islami Ameer Dr Shafiqur Rahman believes neither the state nor political parties have properly fulfilled their obligations towards the martyrs of the July movement.
Expressing regret that the July Charter remains unimplemented, he stated: “The martyrs’ families don’t seek charity – they want to live with dignity.”
The Jamaat Ameer made these remarks at a memorial meeting honoring July Uprising martyrs at the China Friendship Conference Center on Saturday afternoon.
Expressing remorse over the failure to properly honour the martyrs, he stated: “We repent, as proper recognition hasn’t yet been given to the martyrs. Neither the state nor political parties have properly fulfilled their obligations toward the martyrs. Discussions are ongoing at the Consensus Commission, but no progress is being made.”
The Ameer emphasised that Jamaat consistently prioritises implementing the July Charter, noting: “Had the July warriors not existed, we’d still be confined to Keraniganj and Kashempur today. We must never forget this.”
The Jamaat chief pledged: “We remain committed to standing by martyrs’ families. If necessary, I’ll even beg to repay our debt to them. The judicial process must be intensified.”
Highlighting the need for proper rehabilitation through employment opportunities, he asserted: “Martyrs’ families don’t seek charity – they demand dignified livelihoods. Providing them jobs isn’t about quotas; it’s their rightful due.”
