Bangladesh’s taxpayers are turning to the online filing system in record numbers, with almost one lakh returns submitted in just the first 10 days of the 2025-26 tax year.
National Board of Revenue (NBR) data shows that from August 4 to 13, a total of 96,945 taxpayers filed through the e-return platform – an almost fivefold jump from the 20,523 recorded during the same period last year. This year’s daily average stands at nearly 9,700 returns.
The surge began after Finance Adviser Dr Salehuddin Ahmed formally launched the e-return programme on August 4 this year. Since then, the taxpayers have been using the digital system to file from home, often completing the process in minutes.
Under an NBR directive effective from August 3, e-return filing has been made compulsory for all individual taxpayers except those aged 65 or older, physically challenged, living abroad, or deceased taxpayers filing through legal representatives.
A follow-up order on August 11 exempted foreign nationals working in Bangladesh from the requirement. Those facing registration difficulties can apply to their tax zone’s deputy commissioner in-writing by October 31 for permission to file on paper.
The e-return system also allows immediate tax payment through bKash, Nagad, Rocket, debit or credit cards, and bank transfers, with acknowledgment slips and tax certificates printable instantly.
NBR has also introduced a helpline – 09643 71 71 71 – for real-time assistance, while further support is available on the eTax Service portal at www.etaxnbr.gov.bd.
The tax authority has called on citizens to submit returns accurately and within the deadline, terming timely compliance an essential civic duty.
