The National Citizen Party (NCP) has expresses deep concern and anger over a recent incident involving an attempted assault on Mahfuj Alam, the Information and Broadcasting Adviser to the Interim Government and a leader of the July Uprising, at the Bangladesh Consulate Office in New York, USA.
According to the NCP, the attackers were absconding members and supporters of the Awami League, a party it labels as genocidal and fascist.
In addition to the attempted assault, the perpetrators also damaged property within the Consulate, which the NCP described as a direct act of aggression against a state institution.
Marking the anniversary of the July Uprising, the NCP claimed that the Awami League used the occasion to reaffirm what it calls the party’s violent, authoritarian, and criminal tendencies. The organisation also accused the Awami League of denying the July Genocide while continuing acts of political violence beyond Bangladesh’s borders.
In a formal statement, the NCP denounced the incident in the strongest terms, calling for both the interim authorities and the US government to immediately launch a thorough investigation and pursue legal proceedings against those involved in the attack.
The NCP further alleged that recent efforts have been made to downplay or distort historical atrocities—namely, the Pilkhana massacre, the Shapla Genocide, and the July Genocide—through mainstream and online platforms.
The group argues that the attack on the Consulate, the setup of an Awami League office in Kolkata, and the portrayal of the Uprising as a “conspiracy” are all part of what it describes as a continued pattern of violence and manipulation by the Awami League.
“We are also concerned that, despite 24 hours having passed since the incident, there has been no official protest or action from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the interim government regarding this matter. We demand to see a clear stance and action from the interim government on this issue,” the release states.
“We urge the US Government to designate the Awami League as a ‘terrorist organization’ in light of their violent activities and take necessary legal action. Additionally, we call on the forces behind the Uprising to present the information and evidence of these terrorists to the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and US authorities,” it also read.
