The government has suspended a senior official of the National Board of Revenue (NBR) for allegedly leaking confidential state documents, in what authorities described as a serious breach of service discipline.

Mokitul Hasan, who had been posted as second secretary in the NBR’s Customs Policy wing, was suspended on Tuesday and reassigned as an Officer on Special Duty (OSD), according to a notification issued by the Ministry of Finance.

The order cited preliminary findings of an internal inquiry which concluded that Hasan’s unauthorised disclosure of sensitive materials was in violation of government service conduct regulations.

Officials said the leaked documents were classified and linked to ongoing policy-level matters of strategic importance. While the exact contents of the materials have not been made public, sources within the NBR suggest the documents related to possible foreign trade implications.

Disciplinary proceedings have been initiated against Hasan, and his suspension will remain in effect pending further investigation.

A senior official at the Ministry of Finance’s Internal Resources Division, speaking on condition of anonymity, said, “This is a serious matter. The disclosure of state-level confidential documents compromises both administrative integrity and national interest.”

The government has yet to specify whether criminal proceedings will follow, but the case has raised alarm across civil service circles, where concerns over data protection and whistleblower boundaries are increasingly under scrutiny.

The NBR and relevant agencies are currently reviewing internal protocols to prevent future breaches, officials added.

Hasan will remain off-duty with limited access to official resources during the investigation phase.
