The National Board of Revenue (NBR) no longer exists as an institution in the country. The organisation was abolished at midnight, with two new divisions – Revenue Policy and Revenue Administration – being created in its place.

The interim government issued the much-discussed “Revenue Policy and Revenue Administration Ordinance,” disregarding objections from BCS (Income Tax & Customs) cadre officials.

The ordinance, issued late Monday night, made minor adjustments to the scope of the Revenue Policy Division. The administrative positions in the Revenue Administration Division will now be open to both general administration cadre officers and officers from the Income Tax & Customs cadres.

According to the ordinance the Revenue Policy Division will monitor tax law implementation and collection trends while the Revenue Administration Division will handle core revenue collection functions.

The decision comes following a long meeting at the NBR Conference Room on Monday, where officials agreed to hold a sit-in in front of the NBR headquarters at around 2:45pm on Tuesday.

For the past several weeks, NBR officials had been protesting a draft proposal that seeks to divide the NBR into two separate entities and allows for the appointment of administrative cadre officers to key positions, a move they strongly oppose.
