Chief of Naval Staff Admiral M Nazmul Hassan said the government is planning a strategy to enhance capabilities under the “Made in Bangladesh” policy for the defence sector.
He made the remarks during the formal handover ceremony of the floating crane BNFC Boliyan to the Bangladesh Navy. The crane was built by the Navy-operated Dockyard and Engineering Works (DEW) Limited in Sonakanda, Narayanganj.
In line with the Navy’s ongoing modernisation and future operational requirements, the project to construct BNFC Boliyan officially started on 30 June 2024.
The floating crane, which is 45 metres long, 15 metres wide, and 3 metres deep, can travel at a maximum speed of 10.5 miles per hour.
Navy Chief Nazmul said, “The government has taken various initiatives to transform DEW Limited into a self-reliant shipyard. Once achieved, it will be possible to build large-scale warships.”
Managing Director of DEW Limited Commodore Faiz, Principal Staff Officers from Navy Headquarters and senior officials attended the ceremony.
This 70-tonne lifting platform will provide crucial support for the repair and maintenance of ships stationed at jetties and at sea.
Additionally, it will play a vital role in executing complex technical tasks such as the lifting, transfer, and replacement of heavy machinery and mechanical equipment with increased efficiency and safety.
