National University Vice-Chancellor Professor ASM Amanullah was allegedly assaulted Wednesday by a group of students demanding automatic passing grades for their failed 2022 bachelor’s (pass course) examinations.

The incident occurred during a demonstration outside the university’s administrative building in Gazipur at noon.

According to a press release signed by NU Public Relations Director (acting) Md Mostafizur Rahman, the VC sustained minor injuries when “criminals posing as students” surrounded his vehicle at noon and attempted to physically attack him as he was leaving the premises.

The demonstrators were protesting despite the university having already granted grace marks to account for disruptions caused by the Covid-19 pandemic and political unrest.

“The university provided re-evaluation options with results pending this month, yet some students resorted to violence, demanding unjustified ‘auto passes’,” the release went on to state, emphasising that the institution would “never, under any circumstances, give ‘auto passes’ to students of any batch.”

Authorities have begun identifying the attackers and are planning to file a case with Gachha Police Station.

Gachha Police Station OC Ali Mohammad Rashed confirmed the protest to The Daily Star but noted no formal complaint had been lodged at the time of filing this report.

“Legal measures will follow if the university files charges,” he said.
