National Fisheries Week 2025 will be celebrated across the country from 18 to 24 August, with the theme “Let’s create fish sanctuaries, fill the country with native fish,” aimed at raising public awareness on the expansion, conservation, development, and sustainable use of the nation’s fish resources.
The inaugural ceremony will be held on Monday at 10am at the Bangladesh–China Friendship Conference Centre. Chief Adviser to the Government of the People’s Republic of Bangladesh, Professor Dr Muhammad Yunus, will attend the programme as the chief guest, with Adviser to the Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock Farida Akhter in the chair.
The central events will feature the inauguration and medal distribution on 18 August, a road rally on Manik Mia Avenue and technology exhibition on 19 August, a seminar on the importance and future of fish sanctuaries on 20 August, a discussion and documentary screening at Karwan Bazar Fish Market on 21 August, a discussion on boosting fish and fish product exports in Chattogram on 22 August, an exchange meeting with fishermen, fish farmers, and traders at the Department of Fisheries on 23 August, and the closing and cultural programme at the Krishibid Institution Bangladesh on 24 August.
In recognition of outstanding contributions to the fisheries sector, 16 individuals and organisations will receive the National Fisheries Medal 2025 at the event. Gold, silver, and bronze medals will be awarded for first, second, and third places respectively.
This year’s Fisheries Week programme will also place special emphasis on paying tribute to the martyrs and injured of the July mass uprising. Nationwide activities will include rallies, seminars, technology exhibitions, discussions, documentary screenings, exchange meetings, closing events, and cultural performances.
At the district and upazila levels, the week’s activities will include rallies, inaugurations, awards for successful entrepreneurs, fry releases, exchange meetings, documentary screenings, safe fish farming campaigns, youth workshops, quizzes and art competitions, sports events for fishermen, and cultural performances. The week will conclude with evaluation, closing, and cultural programmes on the final day.
The Ministry of Fisheries and Livestock has called for the cooperation of all related organisations, fishermen, entrepreneurs, and the public to ensure the successful celebration of the event.
Following the tragic plane crash at the Milestone School and College campus in Diabari, Uttara, the inauguration and all programmes scheduled for 22 July were postponed. The ministry expressed deep sorrow and respect for those who lost their lives in the incident.
