Police have filed a murder case in connection with the death of seven-year-old Riya Gope, who was fatally shot while playing on the rooftop of her house, during the July uprising in Narayanganj.

Narayanganj Sadar Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Mohammad Nasir Ahmed confirmed the filing on Wednesday.

He said police as a plaintiff registered the case with Narayanganj Sadar Police Station on Tuesday night after 11-month of the incident as victim’s family did not file any complaint.

Around 200 unidentified people were made accused in the case.

According to the case statement, the incident occurred on July 19, during an anti-discrimination protest organised as part of the July Movement.

Protesters reportedly came under attack in the Nayamati area, where armed individuals, alleged to be affiliated with the ruling Awami League, opened fire and hurled explosives.

Riya, who was playing on the rooftop of a five-story building owned by Deepak Kumar near Gulshan Hall, was seriously injured after being shot in the head.

She was initially taken to Victoria Hospital and later transferred to Dhaka Medical College Hospital, where she succumbed to her injuries on July 24.

Police have named 200 unidentified individuals as accused in the case. Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime) Tarek Al Mehedi confirmed the filing, stating that it was initiated to ensure justice for the victim.
