A court in Cumilla has granted a five-day remand to Shah Paran, accused of disseminating the viral video of a woman being sexually assaulted in Muradnagar online.
Judge Mominul Haque of Cumilla’s Amli Court approved the remand order on Wednesday after the investigation officer of the case and Sub-Inspector (SI) of Muradnagar Police Station Ruhul Amin filed a petition seeking a 10-day remand.
According to the police, Shah Paran played a pivotal role in filming and sharing the video of the victim in an abused state.
Earlier, Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) revealed at a press briefing that the sexual assault in Muradnagar, Cumilla — and the subsequent circulation of its video on social media — was a premeditated act stemming from a bitter family conflict rather than a random attack.
Shah Paran is the younger brother of Fazar Ali, the prime suspect in the sexual assault and alleged rape of the woman.
RAB arrested Shah Paran on July 3 from Burichang upazila and subsequently handed him over to Muradnagar police on July 4. He was later sent to Cumilla Central Jail on July 5.
According to police officials, on the night of June 26, while the victim’s parents were attending a religious fair nearby, Fazar Ali entered the woman’s bedroom around 11:30 pm on the pretext of collecting interest on a loan he had given to the victim’s mother.
Moments later, Shah Paran, together with Abul Kalam, Anik, Arif, Suman, Ramzan, and 8–10 other unidentified accomplices, forced their way into the house, tortured and sexually assaulted the woman, and recorded a video of the attack, subsequently sharing it on social media, causing public outrage.
RAB said Shah Paran used messaging app imo to mobilise the group and coordinate the assault.
Following the incident, the victim filed two separate cases under the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act and the Pornography Control Act with the Muradnagar Police Station on June 27.
