The mastermind behind the circulation of videos of the alleged assault and rape of a Hindu woman in Muradnagar of Cumilla has been arrested.
The arrestee was identified as Shah Poran, younger brother of Fazar Ali, prime accused in the rape case, said RAB official Mahmudul Hasan.
Shah Poran was arrested on Thursday afternoon during a raid on his hideout in Burichang upazila in the district. He went into hiding after the incident.
Zahidur Rahman, officer-in-charge of Muradnagar Police Station, said, “The police investigation has confirmed Shah Poran’s involvement in circulating the video.”
The incident sparked public outrage after a video of the woman, stripped of her clothes, was widely shared on social media platforms.
Following the incident, the victim filed a rape case in which she specifically accused Fazar Ali of sexual assault.
So far, six people, including Fazar and Shah Poran, have been arrested in connection with the case.
According to the case details, about two weeks ago, the woman had returned to her parental home.
Late at night, after her parents had gone out, Fozor Ali entered the house and raped her.
Police confirmed that Fazar, accused of raping the wife of an expatriate in a village in Muradnagar, was initially caught and beaten by locals but managed to escape the scene.
During the incident, some individuals filmed the victim and circulated the footage online. Muradnagar police subsequently arrived at the scene and initiated legal proceedings.
