A Munshiganj court on Monday granted a two-day remand for a youth arrested for publicly assaulting two girls from a picnic group at Munshiganj Launch terminal.
Senior Judicial Magistrate of Munshiganj Cognizance Court-1 passed the order after hearing a remand petition filed by police.
Law enforcement had initially sought a seven-day remand for Jihad Hassan, who was detained on Sunday after a video went viral on social media of him beating two girls aboard the launch.
The incident occurred on Friday evening at around 7:30pm when MV Captain, a launch carrying 300-400 picnickers returning from South Keraniganj, anchored at Munshiganj Launch terminal.
As some passengers disembarked to buy snacks, an altercation broke out following offensive remarks. Subsequently, around 50 locals boarded the launch, attacking the picnickers and vandalising property.
At one stage, two women were dragged in front of the launch and beaten publicly. Police and army personnel later intervened to bring the situation under control.
A case was filed against Jihad and 25 unidentified individuals in connection with the incident.
Previously, while talking to journalists, Jihad said, “The victims pleaded with me to rescue them from the situation. I did this for their own good. The crowd had become aggressive toward the two girls. At that moment, they asked us to ‘save’ them. As a brother, I intervened by striking them a few times.”
