The Dhaka Mass Transit Company Limited (DMTCL) is set to introduce a Universal Ticketing System (UTS) for MRT Line-6 stations to reduce passenger congestion and modernise the fare collection system.
The new system will allow commuters to pay fares using bank cards or mobile banking, while adding dedicated entry and exit gates at each station, reports BSS.
DMTCL Director (Operations & Maintenance) Nasir Uddin Ahmed confirmed that four additional automated gates – two for entry and two for exit – will be installed at every station alongside existing gates.
“The new system will operate independently while maintaining current ticketing options during transition,” said Ahmed on Tuesday.
The Central Procurement Technical Unit floated tenders for the project on April 28, attracting interest from about 30 domestic and foreign companies.
Under the unique financing model, the selected contractor will bear all installation and operational costs, recovering investment through a share of ticket revenue.
While the UTS promises faster transactions and reduced queues, officials note implementation will take time after contractor selection and equipment installation.
