Former MP and musician Momtaz Begum has been ordered to be sent to jail after completing a four-day remand. On Saturday, Dhaka’s Chief Metropolitan Magistrate Md Minhajur Rahman rejected her bail petition and issued the order.
Momtaz was produced in court after the remand period ended. The investigating officer of the case, Sub-Inspector Monirul Islam of Mirpur Model Police Station, sought her detention in jail.
The defense did apply for bail, which the prosecution opposed, and after hearing both sides, the court denied Momtaz’s request for bail.
Earlier, on May 13, police sought a seven-day remand for Momtaz, but the court granted only four days.
She was arrested from Dhaka’s Dhanmondi area at around 11:45pm on May 12.
According to the case details, on July 19, 2024, Mohammad Shagor participated in an anti-discrimination student protest at the Mirpur-10 roundabout. He was shot during the protest and later succumbed to his injuries. On November 27, Shagor’s mother, Beauty Akter, filed a murder case at Mirpur Police Station.
The case names 243 individuals, including Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina and Momtaz Begum, along with 250 to 400 others who were unnamed.
Momtaz Begum was elected MP three times (2008, 2014, and 2018) as an Awami League candidate but lost in the 2024 election.
