Mohammedan Sporting Club have clinched their first Bangladesh Premier League title, ending an 18-year wait in the professional era and a 23-year drought overall. Their triumph was sealed without even kicking a ball, as title rivals Abahani Limited suffered a 2-1 defeat to Fortis FC in Cumilla on Saturday, confirming Mohammedan’s status as champions with three games to spare.
It is the club’s 20th top-flight league title — the most in Bangladesh’s domestic football history — and marks a remarkable turnaround for one of the country’s most storied sides, who had last won the league in 2002 during the Dhaka Premier Division League days.
The victory has been especially sweet for head coach Alfaz Ahmed, a former national captain and Mohammedan legend, who has guided the team through a period of both resurgence and financial uncertainty. Speaking to a local news portal, Alfaz said it was time for the club to repay the commitment shown by the players and coaching staff.
“You don’t win championships every day. We’ve brought the trophy back to Mohammedan, and that needs to be recognised,” the 51-year-old said. “What we’ve done is bring back people’s love for the club. We’ve instilled belief — that we can beat teams like Bashundhara Kings.”
Alfaz was cautious about celebrating too early, noting that the players and staff are still owed nearly three months’ wages. “It’s time for the officials to pay back,” he added.
Mohammedan’s success this season has been built on consistency and resilience. With 38 points from 15 matches — 12 wins, two draws, and just one defeat — the Black and Whites have been the standout side. Their goal difference of +26 is a testament to their attacking prowess and defensive solidity.
At the heart of their revival has been Malian forward and captain Souleymane Diabate, who has led by example with goals, assists, and unwavering loyalty. “It’s a dream come true for me,” said Diabate. “Many teams wanted me to leave Mohammedan, but I stayed because I wanted to give something back. Alhamdulillah, my prayers have been answered.”
Under Alfaz’s stewardship, Mohammedan had already won the Federation Cup in 2022–23 and reached the final again last season. Now, with the league title secured, the club’s long-suffering fans can finally celebrate — and look to a brighter, more stable future.
