By Staff Correspondent, Dhaka – Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reaffirmed his government’s commitment to supporting a democratic, stable, peaceful, progressive, and inclusive Bangladesh.
In a statement released by India’s Ministry of External Affairs following the first meeting between Prime Minister Modi and Bangladesh’s interim Chief Adviser Muhammad Yunus, it was noted that Modi emphasized India’s desire to build a positive and constructive relationship with Bangladesh, grounded in pragmatism.
The two leaders held their meeting on the sidelines of the BIMSTEC Summit in Bangkok on Friday.
The statement highlighted that Modi stressed the importance of ongoing bilateral cooperation, which he said has delivered tangible benefits to the people of both nations. He also urged both sides to refrain from rhetoric that could damage the diplomatic environment between the countries.
India further emphasized the importance of strict law enforcement and curbing illegal border crossings to ensure border security and stability.
A bilateral mechanism could meet, as appropriate, to review and advance “our relationship,” the statement added.
Prime Minister Modi also voiced concerns over the safety and security of minority communities in Bangladesh, particularly Hindus. He hoped that the Bangladeshi authorities would ensure their protection, including by thoroughly investigating incidents of violence and ensuring justice for victims.
Modi conveyed his belief that all outstanding issues of mutual interest could continue to be addressed and resolved bilaterally through dialogues, in line with the longstanding and mutually beneficial partnership between the two nations.
He also congratulated Chief Adviser Yunus on assuming the BIMSTEC chairmanship and expressed confidence that the forum would make further progress in promoting regional cooperation under Bangladesh’s leadership.
Both leaders agreed to enhance consultation and collaboration to deepen regional integration, particularly through the BIMSTEC platform.
