A Dhaka court on Monday sent model Simu Akter Brishti, popularly known as Misti Subhas, and one other individual to jail following the completion of their remand in a case filed under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
Dhaka Judicial Magistrate Md Tajul Islam Sohag passed the order after the accused were produced before the court by the investigating officer, Sub-Inspector (SI) Md Shahiduzzaman of Ashulia Police Station.
On 27 March, the court had granted a two-day remand for Misti Subhas and a three-day remand for the other accused, identified as Rafiqul Islam alias Durjoy. Following the expiry of their respective remand periods, the police sought to keep them in custody until the probe is complete.
SI Bishwajit Debnath of the Prosecution Department of Dhaka District Police confirmed the court’s decision, noting that the magistrate rejected the bail petitions moved by the defence lawyers after the state opposed the plea.
According to the case statement, at approximately 1:10pm on 26 March, around 22 to 25 leaders and activists of the Bangladesh Awami League – described in the documents as a banned organisation – gathered in front of the main altar of the National Memorial in Savar.
The group reportedly carried placards featuring images of deposed prime minister Sheikh Hasina and Sheikh Mujibur Rahman.
They were alleged to have chanted slogans including “Joy Bangla,” “Joy Bangabandhu,” and “We do not and will not accept the illegal government of the illegal election,” as well as “Sheikh Hasina will return, Bangladesh will smile.”
Police detained the two individuals at the site at approximately 1:30pm that day, leading to the filing of a case at Ashulia Police Station.
