Meghna Alam, a model and Miss Earth Bangladesh 2020, has been shown arrested in a fraud case filed by police days after her controversial detention under Special Powers Act.
Metropolitan Sessions Judge’s Court in Dhaka passed the order on Thursday after police produced her before the court with a petition seeking Meghna’s arrest to be formally recorded.
According to the case filed with Dhanmondi Police Station, Meghna, along with Dewan Samir – an accomplice of the model, and two or three unnamed individuals, is protagonist of a fraud syndicate.
This syndicate allegedly employed attractive young women to woo foreign diplomats and wealthy business tycoons into honey traps.
The syndicate would reportedly use intimate relations and threats of exposure to extort large sums of money, the case papers say.
Metropolitan Magistrate Masum Mia, after scrutinizing the petition, granted the plea of Bangladesh police and ordered Meghna to be shown arrested in the case.
Dewan Samir is said to be the CEO of Kawaii Group and the owner of Sanjana International, a manpower recruiting agency. He was previously involved with another business named Mirai International Event Management Limited.
Samir reportedly hired smart, attractive models as brand ambassadors to facilitate access to diplomats and business tycoons, according to the case documents.
The prosecution claims that this plot was part of a grand design to blackmail high-profile targets and demand hefty amount.
Meghna Alam, on April 10, was put into a 30-day detention under the Special Powers Act over her alleged involvement with the fraud syndicate.
