A man was killed in a mob beating over allegations of raping a six-year-old child in Gobindaganj upazila of Gaibandha.
The deceased was identified as Habil Mia, 50, son of late Kasem Ali of Polupara village under Katabari Union of Gobindaganj upazila.
Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge (OC) Bulbul Islam confirmed the incident on Sunday morning (June 29).
The incident happened around midnight on Saturday in Polupara village.
According to locals, Habil Mia allegedly lured a six-year-old girl from the village to his house on Friday afternoon and raped her before fleeing the scene. After the family discovered the incident, they took the child to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex. Later, the victim’s father filed a written complaint with the police.
On Saturday night, locals spotted Habil Mia roaming in the area and detained him before beating him. Upon receiving information, Gobindaganj police rescued him in critical condition and took him to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex, where an on-duty doctor declared him dead.
OC Bulbul Islam confirmed that the accused died following a mob beating. The body has been sent to Gaibandha District Hospital for autopsy.
