Milestone tragedy: Nations, organisations extend condolences and support

The Metropolitan Chamber of Commerce and Industry, Dhaka (MCCI) on Tuesday expressed its profound shock and deepest sorrow at the loss of lives in the crash of a Bangladesh Air Force aircraft into Milestone School and college campus in Uttara, Dhaka.

“This is a moment of profound national grief. The loss of so many young lives—full of promise, potential, and service—is both heartbreaking and deeply unsettling,” an MCCI press release stated. MCCI reaffirmed its commitment to working constructively with the government and all other stakeholders to promote a safer, more secure environment for our communities.

The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has formally written to the government of Bangladesh asking for information on any critical medical support that may be needed to be arranged in India for those injured in the tragic incident. On Tuesday, it said it will extend all necessary facilitation.

The communication came as a follow-up to the message from Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi, who said, “India stands in solidarity with Bangladesh and is ready to extend all possible support and assistance,” in a message on Monday.

The UN Resident Coordinator’s office and UNICEF Bangladesh released statements, extending their sympathy to the victims and families affected by the crash, while acknowledging with sadness the death of several people, including many children and dozens of people heavily injured.

The UN system would join the one day-state mourning declared for tomorrow and offered its support to the government in response to this tragic emergency, the statement mentioned. UNICEF said it was actively collaborating with the Department of Social Services by “deploying trained social workers to help affected families and children.”

The Delegation of the European Union (EU) in Bangladesh expressed deep sorrow over the casualties caused by the crash on Monday. In a condolence message, the EU Delegation said it was deeply saddened by the tragic incident and extended heartfelt sympathy to the victims, their families, and all those affected by the accident.

The US Department of State’s Bureau of South and Central Asian Affairs (SCA) released a statement on X reposted by the US Embassy in Bangladesh saying, “We are deeply saddened by the tragic crash of the Bangladesh Air Force training aircraft in Uttara. Our thoughts are with those injured and the families who lost their loved ones during this difficult time.”
