Lionel Messi and Jordi Alba could face a one-match suspension after reportedly pulling out of Major League Soccer’s All-Star Game, according to multiple media reports from the United States on Wednesday.
The Inter Miami duo were expected to start for the MLS All-Stars against a Liga MX select team in Austin, Texas, in the annual exhibition clash held late on Wednesday night.
However, US outlets reported that both players had withdrawn from the fixture, though no official reason was provided by either the club or the league. According to MLS rules, players who miss the All-Star Game without a valid excuse, such as injury, are liable to serve a one-game suspension.
Their absence from the high-profile fixture had been under speculation after Inter Miami coach Javier Mascherano indicated that he would prefer the veteran pair to sit out the match.
“The players are called up. I’d prefer they rest, but it’s not my decision,” said Mascherano over the weekend. “I know how important the All-Star Game is, and as far as I know, there’s no decision from the club. Everything continues as normal.”
Messi, 38, and Alba, 36, have both struggled with fitness in recent months and have had to contend with a punishing fixture list. Inter Miami’s recent schedule has included domestic league matches as well as travel and games for the FIFA Club World Cup.
As of Wednesday evening, Major League Soccer had not responded to requests for comment on the matter. It remains to be seen whether the league will accept any medical justification for the withdrawals or proceed with disciplinary action.
